My interest in the breed started about 25 years ago, however my first dog was a springer spaniel which I have to be honest, was totally out of control. (You've heard the saying there are no bad dogs, only bad handlers.)
After the springer spaniel I vowed the next dog would be trained to a far better standard! This led me to joining the Suffolk gundog club which in turn led to me purchasing a springer spaniel x Labrador (Springerdor) off the secretary of the club, Angie Musk.
With the help of the Suffolk Gundog Club, the Springerdor 'Bobby' was trained to a much better standard and I was able to work this dog in the field. From Bobby I began training Labradors and subsequently got into competing in working field trials. Having such an interest in dogs led to my wife and I starting up and running a boarding kennel business opening Blyvalley Boarding Kennels in 1998 which in turn complemented my hobby quite nicely. Over the last 15 years I have had a particular interest in fox red Labrador, the first being Birkettdown Noggin The Nog of Bedgebrook.
Having won a few field trials and featuring in the awards of various trials I have had the opportunity to start judging trials, recently becoming a B panel judge.
My son also has an interest in training and competing, winning two novice trials and featuring in other awards, and has just recently passed the kennel club field trial exam.
